Can Ketosis Help with Autoimmune disorders?

Our new email series, Answers from the 21DMK, is inspired by the incredible questions asked during our latest 21-Day Metabolic Kick (21DMK) class. Students from around the world joined this intensive program, transforming their metabolisms in just three weeks.

During my visits to their classrooms, I answered personal and thought-provoking questions—many of which I know our readers would love to hear. This series brings those answers directly to you.

This Week’s Question:

Can autoimmune disorders be reversed with a ketogenic diet?

✅ The short answer: Yes.
🔬 The longer answer: It depends on the severity and the organ affected.

Autoimmune disorders occur when the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s own cells, treating them as foreign invaders. Whether it’s the thyroid, joints, blood vessels, brain, or intestines, this misfiring immune response leads to chronic inflammation and damage.

How does ketosis help?

true ketogenic state—not just a casual low-carb diet—can dramatically reduce inflammation and, in many cases, turn off the immune cells attacking your body. But achieving this requires an advanced state of ketosis, maintained consistently.

Why does ketosis work?

Staying in deep ketosis for at least six weeks yields two major benefits:
1️⃣ Reduces excess fluid and inflammation throughout the body.
2️⃣ Encourages healthier cell replication. Weaker, defective immune cells that drive autoimmunity struggle to survive in this metabolic state and die off, allowing healthier cells to take their place.

Does it work for all autoimmune disorders?

The ability to reverse an autoimmune condition depends on how quickly the affected cells regenerate:

  • Fast-replicating cells (like white blood cells) respond quickly. When my mother battled cancer, deep ketosis devastated her cancerous white blood cells while allowing healthy ones to replenish.
  • Slow-replicating cells (like brain cells in multiple sclerosis) require longer periods of ketosis to see significant improvement.

The key takeaway?
The longer and stronger your body remains in deep ketosis, the better your chances of reversing autoimmune damage.
