Does GLP-1 Block Autophagy? Lets Clear The Air
| Welcome to week two of our mini-series on micro-dosing GLP-1 medications! This week, we’re answering a question I often hear from patients: “Could GLP-1 block autophagy and leave me with loose skin, like some gastric bypass patients?” It’s a great question—and I’m excited to dive in with you. What Is Autophagy, and Why Does It Matter? Autophagy is your body’s natural recycling system—a discovery so impactful it earned a Nobel Prize in 2016. Think of it as a cellular cleanup crew that sweeps away damaged proteins and regenerates healthy cells. It’s vital for weight loss and overall health, helping prevent issues like loose skin by efficiently recycling resources. GLP-1 and Autophagy: The Truth Here’s the good news: GLP-1 does not block autophagy. The real driver of this process is ketone production, which kicks in when your body enters nutritional ketosis (burning fat for fuel). Whether you’re using GLP-1 or not, autophagy thrives when ketones are present—not when GLP-1 is absent. Contrast this with gastric bypass patients who lose weight without ketones. Without autophagy, their bodies don’t recycle proteins effectively, often resulting in loose skin. GLP-1 users can avoid this fate by maintaining ketosis—a key point I’ll show you how to achieve. Meet the Dr. Boz’s Ratio (DBR): Your Autophagy Guide How do you know if autophagy is happening? That’s where the Dr. Boz’s ratio (DBR) comes in—a simple tool I created to predict autophagy using your glucose and ketone levels. Here’s the breakdown: Low glucose and high ketones yield a low DBR—your signal that autophagy is in full swing. It’s a practical, no-guesswork metric, and it applies even when you’re on GLP-1. For example: I’m going to use easy numbers. Let’s say your glucose is 100 and your ketones are 2.0. You divide the small number by the large number and you come up with the DBR. (100/2.0=DBR of 50) A good chance you are in autophagy. The Key to Success: Stay in Ketosis with GLP-1 To unlock autophagy’s benefits while using GLP-1, maintain nutritional ketosis. This means:
By staying in this metabolic sweet spot, you can lose weight, trigger autophagy, and minimize loose skin—all while leveraging GLP-1’s power. As a physician, I’ve seen this approach transform outcomes for my patients, and the science backs it up. Beyond Weight Loss: GLP-1’s Bigger Promise GLP-1 isn’t just about shedding pounds. Emerging research suggests it may help chronic brain disorders like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and multiple sclerosis. For the first time in my career, I see real hope for patients with these debilitating conditions—a reason I’m passionate about these hormone-based therapies.
