What is the glucose over ketones (GKI) ratio, and why is it important?

Know Your Ratio

When you flip your body from burning sugar to burning fat, you unlock ketones, the cleaner mitochondrial fuel. But how do you measure that shift? That’s where GKI comes in.

What is the GKI?

GKI = Glucose ÷ Ketones

The Glucose-Ketone Index (GKI) tells you how deeply you’re in ketosis. It measures the battle between glucose and ketones for dominance in your bloodstream.

A high GKI? Glucose is still winning.
A low GKI? Your ketones are in charge and healing can begin.

How to Calculate GKI?

You’ll need two numbers: (1) Blood Glucose (mg/dL) and (2) Blood Ketones (mmol/L)

Then divide your glucose by your ketones. That’s it.

Example:
Glucose: 90 mg/dL
Ketones: 1.0 mmol/L
GKI = 90 ÷ 1.0 = 90

A GKI under 100 signals early ketosis. Lower ratios = deeper ketosis = stronger metabolic performance.

What Tools Do You Need?

(1) A blood glucose meter

(2) A blood ketone meter

(3) (Optional: Dr. Boz Ratio Spreadsheet to track everything in one place)

Your GKI isn’t just a number. It’s a metabolic scoreboard. It tells you when you’re healing, when you’re stalling, and when you’ve turned the corner.
