Is Poor Sleep Sabotaging Your Blood Sugar Control?
Your questions pour in from all platforms, but I answer them best in our 21-Day Metabolic Kick (21DMK) class—held twice a year.
The February class was our best yet, with students transforming their metabolisms in just three weeks. These emails come from the questions asked inside the class. If you find this email valuable, forward it to a friend who wants to learn about the authentic ketogenic lifestyle.
Let’s reach more people who are ready to take control of their health!
Q: My blood sugars are still in the 100s. Could poor sleep be responsible?
This is a critical question—and the answer is yes. For years, I’ve worked to convince patients that we cannot fully address metabolic issues without first tackling sleep problems.
Early in my career, I hosted free sleep seminars, prescribed medications, and recommended pulse oximeters to diagnose sleep apnea. While these helped some, the most powerful tool has been the continuous glucose monitor (CGM). It reveals, in real time, how poor sleep disrupts your metabolism.
The Sleep-Metabolism Connection
When you experience restless nights or insomnia, your body responds by releasing stress hormones like cortisol. This triggers your liver to release glucose, raising your blood sugar—often into the 100s, even while you sleep.
Unlike the natural “dawn phenomenon,” this is a sign of metabolic distress.
For example, patients with undiagnosed sleep apnea often see a distinct “sinusoidal” pattern on their CGM during sleep: blood sugar spikes as they hold their breath, then dips as breathing resumes. This cycle repeats, driven by oxygen deprivation and cortisol surges. Even without apnea, many are surprised to find their blood sugar lingers between 105 and 110 mg/dL overnight—far from optimal for long-term health.
Why It Matters
Consistently elevated blood sugar during sleep accelerates aging, increases inflammation, and raises the risk of chronic conditions. But the good news is that by improving your sleep, you can regain control of your metabolism.
Steps to Fix Your Sleep
Here are three proven strategies to optimize your sleep and, in turn, your blood sugar:
1. Watch This Video: My 2012 lecture on sleep remains a timeless resource. It explains why quality sleep is non-negotiable for metabolic health. Lecture Link HERE
2. Screen for Sleep Apnea:
- Pulse Oximeter Hack: Purchase a FORA CARE pulse oximeter on the Dr. Boz Favorite’s Page. Purchase HERE. It uses the same software as clinical devices to detect oxygen drops during sleep, helping identify sleep apnea. Share it with loved ones—hidden apnea is more common than you think.
- CGM Insight: If your CGM shows a wave-like pattern overnight, it’s a red flag for apnea. Oxygen is essential for metabolic repair, and without it, progress stalls.
3. Monitor Your Glucose: A CGM is the only device that reveals your metabolism’s behavior 24/7. It’s a game-changer for understanding how sleep impacts your blood sugar.
Take Control Today
If you’re ready to break the cycle of poor sleep and high blood sugar, our partners at Meaningful Medicine offer a year-long CGM prescription program. It’s a powerful step toward reclaiming your health.
