The Hidden Cost of High Blood Sugar on Your Brain’s Future

Is it true that high blood sugar is aging my brain—even if I feel okay now?

This is an excellent question—one that has shaped my 25-year career in optimizing brain health. Before integrating the ketogenic diet into my practice, I observed patients with seemingly healthy markers—hemoglobin A1c levels between 5.5 and 6.2, BMIs of 25 to 30—gradually develop conditions like multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, or memory loss. These numbers weren’t alarming, yet their brains were aging prematurely.

Over the past six years, compelling evidence has confirmed a critical insight: average blood sugar and insulin levels are key predictors of brain health. Even if you feel fine today, elevated blood sugar silently accelerates brain aging.

Here’s why—and what you can do to protect yourself.

The Science: Trash Buildup in Your Brain

Your brain naturally produces proteins like tau and amyloid, often dubbed “trash” when they accumulate. A healthy brain clears this debris efficiently. However, when average blood sugar rises above optimal levels, this cleanup process weakens, leading to buildup.

Over time, this can result in cognitive decline, memory issues, or neurodegenerative diseases.

Hemoglobin A1c: A Window into Brain Health

Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) reflects your average blood sugar over three months. Early in my career, I targeted an A1c of 5.5 or below. Now, I aim for 5.0 or lower—and here’s why:

  • A1c of 5.0% equates to an average blood sugar of 97 mg/dL.
  • A1c of 5.7%—often labeled “normal”—translates to 116 mg/dL.

While 116 mg/dL may seem safe, it’s a threshold. Beyond this, the risk of silent damage, such as mini-strokes, increases. These hidden strokes—often without symptoms—can erode memory, focus, and energy over time. I’ve seen patients stunned by brain scans revealing this damage, finally explaining years of brain fog or fatigue.

The Double-Digit Rule: Keep Blood Sugar Below 100

For optimal brain health, maintain an average blood sugar below 100 mg/dL—corresponding to an A1c of 5.0% or less. It’s a challenging goal, but the reward is a sharper, more resilient brain as you age.

Here’s how I achieve this personally:

  1. Ketones for Brain Fuel: I target morning ketones above 0.8 mmol/L, indicating efficient fat-burning and brain support.
  2. Low Uric Acid: As a marker of metabolic waste, keeping uric acid low minimizes “trash” buildup in my brain.

These metrics help me combat the micro-inflammation that hastens brain aging.

Why Act Now?

The damage is silent—by the time symptoms emerge, years of opportunity have slipped away.

After 25 years of guiding patients, I’ve witnessed the devastating cost of inaction. Protect your brain today—keep your blood sugar in the double digits—and enjoy clarity tomorrow.

Keeping your average blood sugar below 100 mg/dL is a powerful investment in your brain’s future.
