Tom & Jerry’s – my favorite Christmas Tradition

Christmas in a small town—there’s just something magical about it, isn’t there? I grew up in a little town of just 800 people. And while we didn’t have big parades or shopping malls, we had traditions that brought the whole community together. Those memories? They’re some of my favorite Christmas gifts of all.

One of our biggest traditions kicked off during pheasant hunting season. Opening weekend was like a town-wide holiday—everything stopped. No one was harvesting crops. Instead, everyone grabbed a long gun, bundled up, and headed out for some good old-fashioned hunting. If you weren’t shooting pheasants, you were making sure no one else got shot. It was a beautiful mix of tradition, camaraderie, and, well, organized chaos.

Then came one of my favorite Christmas traditions—the annual Tom and Jerry party. Christmas can be a lonely time, especially in small towns where not everyone has family close by. And while churches were a big part of the season, sometimes they got a bit… let’s say competitive. You had the Lutherans over here, the Catholics over there, and the Methodists in another corner.

But once a year, all the churches set aside their differences and came together—for Tom and Jerrys. And let me tell you, it wasn’t the sermons bringing people together; it was that drink!

If you’ve never had one, a Tom and Jerry is this heavenly mix of egg yolks, sugar, cream, and, of course, booze—probably vodka, though I’m not entirely sure. It took hours to whip that creamy base to perfection. And as kids, we got the non-alcoholic version—hot water mixed with the creamy, sugary mixture. It made us feel just like the grown-ups.

Years later, I went back to that tradition as an adult, and let’s just say… I finally understood why everyone got along so well. Tom and Jerrys are not keto-friendly, but hey, you can always make keto adaptations. And if not, there’s always spiced hot chocolate—another favorite.

There’s something about a Mexican-inspired hot chocolate—cinnamon, cayenne, and just the right amount of heat—that takes me right back to those gatherings. It’s a little spicy, a little sweet, and a whole lot of nostalgic.
